Beaufort magistrate and attorney arrested following collision on parkway

Beaufort magistrate Thomas Holloway was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of driving under the influence, following a motor vehicle collision with another vehicle whose driver was cited for failure to yield.

Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the arrest followed a collision between a vehicle driven by Holloway and another vehicle at about 8 p.m. at the intersection of Sea Island Parkway and Seaside Road.

Holloway, 61, of Fripp Island was traveling south on Sea Island Parkway at the time, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Hyundai was attempting to turn left onto Sea Island Parkway from Seaside Road. That driver failed to yield the right of way to Holloway, who then struck that vehicle, according to a Highway Patrol description of the incident.

The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Pye said. Holloway was transported by law enforcement to the hospital, Pye said.

He was treated at the emergency room for a broken nose and concussion, according to documents obtained by the Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet about his treatment.

He was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center at 3:06 a.m. Thursday and released at 8:54 a.m., according to jail records.

Holloway is a long-time attorney with the Harvey and Battey law firm in Beaufort and also a magistrate for the Beaufort County Summary Court. He presides over criminal and traffic cases, landlord/tenant hearings and other matters.

Kevin Dukes, Holloway’s colleague and managing member at Harvey and Battey, said Holloway is currently recovering from his injuries.

“As evidenced by the police report, Mr. Holloway was not at fault and did not contribute to the accident,” Dukes said. “We are grateful that everyone’s injuries were not more serious.”

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette requested copies of the police report, but it was unavailable in time for publication.
