Firefighters battled a blaze on the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island that displaced a family and killed a family pet Wednesday afternoon.

The house fire on Marsh Landing was reported at 2:52 p.m.

Chief Warrant Officer Bobby Yarbrough said the entire inside of the house and the roof was destroyed.

A dog died in the blaze but no individuals were injured in the house. The family, however, has been displaced.

Marines with Parris Island and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and the city of Beaufort and Town of Port Royal fought the fire for about an hour before it was extinguished.

The cause is under investigation, the Marines said.
