Big-time traffic backup in area of Broad River Bridge near Port Royal. Here’s the issue
Editor’s note: As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, traffic is back to normal.
Traffic is backed up big time during morning rush hour on Highway 170/Savannah Highway Tuesday morning at the bridge connecting northern and southern Beaufort County.
The reason is a bridge inspection.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said intermittent lane closures for routine bridge inspections were planned on Broad River Bridge through Wednesday. The inspections began Monday.
The bridge inspections are occurring between 4 a.m. and noon.
Motorists are urged to plan accordingly and expect delays during those times. Traffic appears to be backed up for at least a mile.
The Broad River Bridge, also known as the Edward Burton Rogers Bridge, is a 1.7-mile-long highway spanning the Broad River. The current four-lane wide structure, completed in 2004, carries S.C. Highway 170 as it connects northern and southern sections of Beaufort County.
Both sides of the bridge are in unincorporated areas of Beaufort County near Port Royal.
