Expect large crowds, road closures and the sounds of cannon and musket fire in downtown Beaufort Tuesday morning.

The cause of the road closures is a recreation of an 1825 visit to the city by Marquise de Lafayette, a French aristocrat who became a hero in the Revolutionary War fighting on the side of the American colonies. A person playing Lafayette will arrive at the city’s waterfront at 10 a.m. which will be followed by a procession on Bay Street.

The event is part of the 200th year anniversary of Lafayette’s visit.

There will be shuttles available throughout the event from The Pat Conroy Literacy Center.

Expect large crowds, road closures, and no parking zones.

The following road closures are planned: Bay Street from from Charles to Scott streets 9 a.m.-12; (non parking after 7 a.m.); Scott Street from Bay Street to Port Republic Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m (no parking after 7 a.m.); Craven St. from Scott Street to Carteret Street) will be closed from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. (no parking after p.m. p.m.) Police are advising residents to use alternate routes and to expect delays.

Cannon and musket fire will be heard around 10 a.m., when the Lafayette re-enactment will begin.
