Beaufort police are investigating a suspicious death of a male adult at a large apartment complex, they said late Monday morning.

At 11:36 a.m., police sent out a notice alerting the public to avoid a large police presence at Garden Oaks Apartments, 2000 Salem Road, not far from the intersection of Robert Smalls Parkway and Burton Hill Rd.

Later, the department said officers were dispatched to the apartments at 11:05 a.m. following a report of suspicious activity. A concerned relative of the victim contacted the authorities after being unable to reach the individual, police said.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased adult male. Chief Stephenie Price said the man was found inside of his apartment but would not release details on the cause of death.

“This is an active investigation, and the Beaufort Police Department is working diligently to gather all pertinent information,” police said in a statement.

Garden Oaks Apartments is a new multifamily rental complex with 288 units about 2 1/2 miles southwest of City Hall.

It’s the second time in the past three months that a large contingent of police have been called to the apartment complex.

On Oct. 3, 2024, officers were dispatched in reference to a report of shots fired. Officers simultaneously received a secondary call that a gunshot victim was located at at Lowes on 207 Robert Smalls Parkway. The investigation revealed the victim was inside a vehicle with a few occupants at Garden Oaks when an unknown vehicle arrived on the scene and started shooting at the victim’s vehicle. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
