Acting on a tip, Port Royal police made an arrest of a felon on suspicion of possessing multiple types of drugs and a Ruger Lasermax handgun in an area where this type of criminal activity has been recently reported by the public to law enforcement.

On Christmas morning, officers received a report of a suspicious man in a parked vehicle on Battery Lane near Marina Boulevard who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. Responding to the report, officers canvassed the area and found a vehicle with a 26-year-old Burton man slumped down in the driver’s seat. The driver admitted he had been using marijuana and, after a search of the subject and vehicle, officers recovered a small amount of marijuana and 2.2 grams of crack cocaine, in addition to drug paraphernalia and a handgun. He was arrested and charged for possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute cocaine base, drug paraphernalia and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police Chief Jeffrey Meyers said officers have received multiple complaints recently in regard to possible drug use and sales in this area and this arrest was part of ongoing efforts to respond to concerns raised by the public.

“We take anything like that very seriously,” Meyers told the Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet Monday. “We just want to get a message out to the public any kind of drug sales, drug usage, any thing like that of a illegal nature, will not be tolerated and we are going to investigate it.”
