Hurricane season is officially over, but don’t let your guard down: The coldest weather of the season is moving into the Lowcountry and prompting warnings from the National Weather Service.

The NWS in Charleston on Friday issued a frost advisory that affects the city of Beaufort and the town of Hilton Head and also Townsend, Edisto Beach, Savannah, Pooler and Garden City.

Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will result in frost formation from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday that could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation so take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

It will be even colder in inland areas, where frost warnings are in place.

The cold temperatures will persist into early next week, with highs in the 50s and lows just above freezing.

The good news is hurricane season officially ended Saturday.

“It’s over!” Frank Strait, the severe weather liaison with the South Carolina State Climate Office, announced in his weekly weather report.

The state, he noted, took its lumps this year, with Debby drowning the state with rain in August and Helene’s rampage in September.
