A traffic accident has caused a major traffic backup in downtown Beaufort.

Cars are are backed up on the Woods Memorial Bridge between the city and Lady’s Island, which is slowing traffic on Boundary and Carteret streets.

Beaufort police notified the public at around 3 p.m. that Boundary and Carteret streets along with U.S. 21 across the Woods Memorial Bridge are moving slow.

The reason is a traffic collision on Sea Island Parkway near Warsaw Island.

Sea Island Parkway had to be shut down for the collision, police said. As of 3:48 p.m., the road had been reopened, according to police. But motorists can expect delays for the next 30 minutes to an hour.

The backup is occurring through the city passing Pigeon Point Road.

As a result of the traffic congestion over the Lady’s Island bridge traffic also was backed up on Ribaut Road and Boundary Street as of 4:15 p.m. Monday.
