Spanish Moss Trail fix will take 4 months. Here’s how it will affect your walking routine

Repair work has begun on a section of the popular Spanish Moss Trail along Battery Creek near the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort.

One of the recreational centerpieces for Beaufort County, the 10-mile trail between Beaufort and Port Royal, which winds through water and marshes, draws more than 100,000 residents and visitors annually.

This Spanish Moss Trail between the street crossings at Hermitage Road and Cottage Farm will be closed at times during the next four months while a pedestrian bridge is repaired.

Construction was scheduled to begin Wednesday on a pedestrian bridge between the street crossings at Hermitage Road and Cottage Farm Drive. The work is expected to take four months. The bridge may be closed to pedestrian traffic intermittently during that time, which will force trail users to go back the way they came.

Titan Civil Construction from Tarpon Springs, Florida has been hired to make the repairs to substructure under the bridge, the county said.

Residents are encouraged to use caution when visiting the area and expect closures. For closure information, visit the Spanish Moss Trail website.
