Report of sexual assault at Beaufort High School under investigation, police say
An alleged sexual assault between two students at Beaufort High School in January is under investigation, according to police.
Though information is limited, the incident was reported on Friday and involved “a male student against a female student that allegedly occurred in January. It is actively under investigation at this time,” according to Capt. George Erdel, public information officer with the Beaufort Police Department.
Erdel said that because the investigation is active, the department is unable to comment.
The Beaufort County School District said all dealings with the allegations have been turned over to police.
“If a principal is aware of an incident they report it to the school resource officer. If the school resource officer determines criminal activity may be involved, it is reported to law enforcement. Once this happens, it becomes a police investigation at which point the district cannot comment on it,” said Candace Brasseur, spokesperson for the district, in a statement.
