Beaufort announces memorial service for Police Chief Matt Clancy. Here’s what’s planned

Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy will be honored with a public memorial service, the city announced.

The service is planned for 8:30 a.m. Friday in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, the police department announced Saturday.

Those who attend are encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. The service will also be streamed live on the city of Beaufort Facebook page.

A private burial with military honors will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery. That service is limited to family, law enforcement and invited guests. Before working in law enforcement, Clancy served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Clancy died Wednesday after battling cancer for several years. He had continued his role as the city’s top law enforcement officer throughout his treatment.

Deputy Chief Dale McDorman has been named the department’s interim chief. The city will establish a process soon to appoint the next chief, city manager Bill Prokop said.

McDorman has been deputy chief since 2010 and with the department since 1995
