Beaufort mayor, council seats are up for election this fall. What you need to know

Beaufort voters will choose a mayor and two other City Council members this fall.

Candidate filing opened Wednesday for the at-large municipal election Nov. 3.

Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling, Councilman Mike McFee and Councilwoman Nan Sutton’s seats are open. Each said this week they had not yet decided whether to run.

The City Council includes the mayor and four other members elected to four-year terms. Council members hire and supervise a city manager to direct day-to-day operations — currently Bill Prokop — and decide city policies, plan project priorities and pass an annual budget, among other duties.

Filing fees are $250 for mayor and $200 for council. Filing closes Aug. 14. Candidate packets are available at City Hall at 1911 Boundary St. or through the city’s website at www.cityofbeaufort.org.

Keyserling has been mayor since 2008 and was unopposed in seeking a third term in 2016.

McFee, a real estate broker, is also serving his third term on council.

Sutton, a Beaufort business owner, was first elected in 2016.
