You can explore a remote island with new ferry service from Hunting Island State Park

Ready to explore a new sea island?

A new ferry service to St. Phillips Island starts June 16.

The ferry will take you from Hunting Island State Park to St. Phillips, which is southeast of Pritchards Island in Beaufort County near St. Helena Island.

Coastal Expeditions, the company that runs the ferry, announced daylong trips that start at 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The naturalist-led ecotour will bring you to St. Phillips, where you can “beach comb, hike interior trails or simply relax on the beach with a picnic.” St. Phillips Island has one of the few remaining “boneyard beaches” in South Carolina.

The cost for the ferry trip is $45 for adults or $25 for children.

About St. Phillips Island

St. Phillips Island was a beach retreat for mogul Ted Turner and his family for 40 years.

During that time, trails were carved through the maritime forest and habitats for species like fox squirrels, loggerhead sea turtles and indigo snakes were restored.

With ancient dunes and a mature forest dominated by Spanish moss-draped live oaks, Southern magnolia and saw palmetto, St. Phillips Island provides critical habitat for alligators, sea turtles, bobcats and a myriad of seasonal and resident bird species, including bald eagles, roseate spoonbills and painted buntings.

The island was bought by Hunting Island State Park in 2017 for $5 million.
