Beaufort’s Waterfront Park is getting a new playground. Here’s what the plans look like

A new playground will soon be under construction at Beaufort’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.

The city unveiled renderings Thursday that show the new playground equipment chosen for the park.

One play structure takes the form of a shrimp boat, and a second one has an Arsenal-style facade. Each has nets or ladders for climbing and dark blue slides to get back to the ground.

In the center of the park is a five-foot green mound with another blue slide built in. Two sets of swings and a spinner are lined up on the other side of a meandering path that divides the fenced area.

The playground, to be installed by Great Southern Recreation, will cost the city just under $275,000. Work is expected to begin in July and be completed in August.

The new playground will feature safe surfaces, such as artificial turf on the mound, rubber mats and engineered wood mulch.

More than 400 people responded to a survey earlier this year about what types of equipment the playground should feature.

“Swings, slides, the ability to climb, and spinners were requested most frequently. Parents also wanted to make sure the equipment was inclusionary for children with disabilities,” Linda Roper, director of Downtown Operations & Community Services, said in the city’s news release. “We made sure our new playground has all those features.”

The new playground on the east end of Waterfront Park will replace aging equipment that dates back to 2006. The park looks over the Beaufort River and Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge and is a popular spot for local families and tourists.
