Man found dead in trailer after fire on New Year’s Day in Burton, police say
A man was found dead in a trailer after a morning fire on New Year’s Day in Burton, according to a news release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Burton Fire District responded to the trailer off Savannah Highway fully engulfed in flames around 8:30 a.m. After the fire was extinguished, the body was found inside.
The person has not been identified yet, the release said.
The cause of the fire is also not clear yet, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation, according to the release. The trailer was completely destroyed and is considered “a total loss,” public information officer for the Burton Fire District Dan Byrne said Wednesday.
A forensic autopsy will be scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina to help determine the man’s cause of death, the release said.
Wednesday’s fire is the second in 24 hours within the Burton Fire District.
On Tuesday night, a home fire injured one in Seabrook. The fire is also under investigation, but appears to be cooking-related, Byrne said.
The Seabrook man injured in that fire is being treated at the Joseph Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, Byrne said.
