A pair of brothers were shot at — and returned fire — while driving through Burton early Tuesday morning, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report. The shooting left one of them wounded.

The two were driving on Parris Island Gateway and had just made a U-turn when a nearby vehicle with its windows open started to slow down, the report said. Someone inside allegedly fired about seven shots. The brothers stopped, ran from their car into a nearby marsh where one of them fired four answering shots.

When deputies arrived, the brother who fired a pistol was lying in the marsh alongside the road, with a 9mm handgun in his back pocket, according to the report.

The other brother was in the median of the road. He had been hit in the left shoulder and the right hand, and was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital by Beaufort County EMS, according to the report.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident.
