Lady’s Island road work affecting your commute? Here’s what to expect

A recently paved stretch of roadway in northern Beaufort County is undergoing an additional $200,000 in repairs that could affect commutes for another week or two.

A 2-mile stretch of the northbound lane of Sams Point Road on Lady’s Island is being milled and repaved after cracking was discovered in the asphalt following initial paving late last year. The work starts just north of a new roundabout at Brickyard Point Road and Holly Hall Road and stretches past the Royal Pines area.

That portion of Sams Point Road was recently paved as part of a nearly $9 million contract including 21 miles of road in Beaufort and Jasper counties, S.C. Department of Transportation engineer Toby Wickenhoefer said. Repairing the section of Sams Point Road cost $200,000, he said.

Traffic is restricted to one lane where contractors are working. The area includes numerous neighborhoods and is heavily traveled at certain times of day.

Drivers who live in the areas might benefit from using Middle Road to avoid delays, Wickenhoefer said. Depending on the weather, the paving could require another week or two, he said.

Crews have been working from about 9 a.m. until early evening.

The work follows the completion of a $4 million project to construct the new roundabout nearby.
