The hardwood flooring, baseboards and cabinets at a Dataw Island home under construction were destroyed after a vandal turned faucets on inside the house overnight, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

The foreman working on the North Reeve Road home told deputies there was “water coming from the front door of the house” when he walked up to start work Friday morning, according to the report. There was “a significant amount of water” covering the floor of the main living area, the master bedroom and the master bathroom. The damaged was estimated to cost about $15,000.

At some point between about 2:15 p.m. on Thursday and 10:15 a.m. on Friday, all of the faucets inside the master bathroom — two sinks, a bathtub and a shower — had been turned on, according to the report. More than that, the foreman said, some time overnight the sewer had clogged, sending the water out into the home rather than down the drains.

Neighbors told deputies they hadn’t seen anything suspicious the previous night, according to the report.
