Fire breaks out in Burton home Friday. This kept it from being worse, firefighters say
A Friday afternoon cooking fire in a Burton home would have likely been worse were it not for a smoke detector, a Burton Fire District press release states.
The fire broke out in a mobile home on Parker Drive in Burton around 4 p.m. Friday, according to the release, with firefighters arriving to find smoke coming from the home.
Burton Fire District and MCAS Beaufort firefighters both responded to the fire, the release said. They were able to quickly put it out, with the home suffering only minor damages to the stove and cabinets.
The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking on the stove, which set off the smoke detector when it burst into flame the release said.
Once the fire was out firefighters installed three new smoke detectors in the home and helped clear smoke, according to the release.
The residents were able to remain in their home following the incident, the release said, and they likely have their smoke detector to thank.
“Fires in homes with smoke detectors result in less damages, injuries, and deaths,” the release said. “Fire officials also stress the importance of having a home fire extinguisher mounted in your home in an easily accessible location.”
According to the Burton Fire District cooking fires are the leading cause of local fires.
