Off the beaten path: 4 amazing Beaufort spots you might not know about
When you are looking for something to do in Beaufort there are a few staples that everyone knows about.
The Spanish Moss Trail, Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and The Point are all really amazing places to visit, but how about some of the lesser know gems that are a little more off of the beaten track.
The next time you are looking for an adventure, you should check out these four beautiful spots that you may not have known about.
▪ Fort Fremont Historical Park and Beach - This is the ruins of a military installation near Land’s End on St. Helena Island that was built in the 1890s during the Spanish American War. They hold docent led tours of the fort every fourth Saturday of the month. For more information go to fortfremont.org. The fort is adjacent to a beautiful beach, as well.
▪ St. Helena Parish Chapel of Ease Ruins - While you are on St. Helena Island, you should stop and check out the ruins of the Chapel of Ease. The church was built in the 1740s to serve as a church for the planters that lived on the island and could not get into Beaufort to regularly attend the main parish. To learn more about the history of the church, check out its listing on the National Register of Historical Places.
▪ ‘The Boneyard’ - This is a stretch of beach about a mile long in Hunting Island State Park that is home to hundreds of trees that have been killed by the salt water as the island erodes. You can access it by taking the nature trail near the Nature Center or by walking from the South Beach.
▪ Cypress Wetlands - This is one Beaufort treasure that is hiding in plain sight. The wetlands on Paris Avenue in Port Royal, right next to the police station, and are home to all types of birds, alligators and other interesting animals that you might typically find in the Lowcountry wetlands.
