A Burton couple was fast asleep when a burglar came inside and helped himself or herself to their cash early Thursday morning, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Someone broke open the deadbolt-locked door to the Chesterfield Lake Drive home around 4 a.m., according to the report. The residents, who said they took medication to help them sleep and called themselves “heavy sleepers,” didn’t hear the thief and reported only hearing one bark from their dog before all three were back to sleep.

Around 5:30 a.m. it was time to take the dog out and they noticed $200 in cash and a jar holding about $50 in change had been stolen from their home, according to the report. Assorted change was also reported stolen from each of their vehicles. Deputies attempted to collect DNA samples from the house and the vehicles.
