Historic Beaufort a stop on this Savannah-to-Charleston ‘Bike Tour’
A Vermont-based tour company is offering a new activity-based vacation with a focus on the Lowcountry.
Starting at $3,295, vacationers will meet at a hotel in Savannah’s Historic District to begin their journey and end it a week later in Charleston.
In October, Raja Mukherjee, president of “Sojourn Bicycling & Active Vacations,” visited Savannah, Beaufort and Charleston. About four months later, he developed the walking, biking and kayaking tour. Mukherjee chose the southeast for the new bike tour because “nothing is so rich in history, culture and culinary delights (like the Lowcountry).”
You don’t have to be an endurance cyclist to participate. Heck, you don’t even have to bring your own bike.
Fearful of riding along on US 17 in Jasper County or don’t think you can make it out to Hunting Island State Park?
It’s not that kind of a vacation.
Biking options range in distance from 11 to 29 miles daily for four of the seven days.
You won’t be biking southeast highways. You won’t bike across state lines or even local highways. Tourists, their belongings and bikes will be shuttled to their hotels and biking destinations.
Here’s some of the local stops according to the travel plans.
Day 3: After spending two days in Savannah and an afternoon kayaking on Ebeneezer Creek, vacationers will head to the Beaufort Inn.
Day 4: Vacationers will be shuttled to the Sea Islands and visit three locations that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
First stop are the ruins of the St. Helena Parish Chapel of Ease.
The next stop is the historic Penn Center where vacationer’s “will participate in Penn Center’s standard tour,” Mukherjee said.
The final local stop before heading back to Beaufort is at Hunting Island State Park.
The rest of the days are spent in Charleston where, among other sites, vacationers will visit Fort Moultrie and USS Yorktown and have the option of flying out of the Charleston International Airport.
