Beaufort residents shouldn’t give in to a letter-writer who demands bitcoin in exchange for keeping a big secret from your spouse.

It’s a scam, Beaufort Police say.

A resident recently received a letter demanding $4,500 in bitcoin, the trendy cryptocurrency, in exchange for keeping a secret from the man’s wife, the department posted to its Facebook page Friday.

“I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife,” police say the form letter reads. “More importantly, I have evidence of what you have been hiding.”

The letter goes on to say it won’t reveal specifics, in case the resident’s spouse intercepts the message.

“If you receive a similar letter, do not comply with the instructions,” the post said. “This is a trending scam that is affecting multiple jurisdictions across the country.”
