Burton neighbors report hearing gunshots from a car down the length of their street

A few Burton neighbors reported seeing and hearing shots fired from a vehicle driving down their street around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

The vehicle was allegedly exchanging gunfire with someone in the front yard of a Vaux Road home and then continued firing while heading down the street, according to the report. Shell casings were found in the roadway but no bullet holes were found in nearby homes. When deputies arrived, no one was at the home where the gunfire started.

One neighbor reported hearing a woman repeatedly screaming “Stop!” after the gunfire stopped, according to the report. Another neighbor reported he believed the shots came from a pistol.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
