Three recent fires showed the benefit of having a fire extinguisher handy, a Burton Fire District release said.

On Wednesday, a fire was extinguished in the wheel well of a school bus after the wheel came off. There were no injuries and only the driver was aboard the bus at the time.

On Thursday evening, a man noticed smoke while driving his Ford pickup and used a fire extinguisher to douse an engine fire at Cross Creek Plaza.

And on Friday morning, a window air conditioning unit caught fire and spread to a couch before onlookers put it out with an extinguisher. The Shanklin Road resident was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

Burton Fire District offers free fire extinguisher training.
