Beaufort County’s treasurer for 20 years, Joy Logan dies at 70
Joy Logan, who spent two decades as Beaufort County Treasurer, has died.
The 70-year-old Lobeco resident died Sunday at Beaufort Memorial Hospital after “a brief illness,” according to her obituary.
A funeral is planned for 5 p.m Wednesday at Copeland Funeral Service, and a celebration of life ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Beaufort.
Logan was featured in Gloria Singleton’s 2010 local history book called “Beaufort Through the Ages.”
Logan is quoted in the book saying, “I love Beaufort with all my heart.”
“Where I live in Lobeco on the water, even my closest neighbor’s house is not visible,” she said. “This is the most peaceful place I have ever lived.”
Logan is survived by daughters Mel Logan Middleton and Evelyn Logan Kuhn, stepdaughter Judy Smith Hizer, and five grandchildren, according to her obituary.
Before being elected the county’s first female treasurer in 1990, Logan worked in banking and as a self-employed business consultant.
“I try to associate myself with people that have integrity and are good citizens of Beaufort County, and I do not consider myself a politician but more that of a professional business woman,” she told the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette in 2010.
The final year of Logan’s 20-year tenure in elected office was marred in controversy. County administration officials called for her resignation following the arrest a treasurer's office employee who embezzled $210,000.
She did not resign, but was ousted from office in the 2010 election by Doug Henderson.
