He was handcuffed during a Lady’s Island traffic stop. Then he lost consciousness.
A man lost consciousness during a Lady’s Island traffic stop early this morning and was treated for a possible drug overdose, a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report said.
Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over a car at Sea Island Parkway and Meridian Road for erratic driving just after midnight. Deputies suspected the man had marijuana in the car and handcuffed him in front of a patrol car while his car was searched, the report said.
While handcuffed, the man complained of dizziness and asked to sit down. After deputies called paramedics, the man began sweating heavily, his lips turned blue and he was unresponsive.
A deputy administered Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse an opioid overdose, into one of the man’s nostrils. After no improvement, another deputy used his spray on the other nostril.
EMS arrived a few minutes later. The man later regained consciousness, showed good vital signs and declined a ride to the hospital.
Deputies found empty plastic bags, $2,100 in counterfiet money and a pistol locked in the glove box of the man’s car but no drugs, their report said.
The man was cited for an improper lane change and failure to maintain a lane and left with a woman who came to pick him up.
