Grays Hill family avoids disaster after early morning dryer fire

A Grays Hill family escaped their home unharmed early Thursday morning after a small electrical fire started in their dryer and filled their home with a smoky haze.

The Burton Fire District responded to the fire around 3 a.m. at a residence on Briar Rose Lane after a resident called 911 and said her home smelled like an electrical fire that was getting worse, according to a fire district news release.

When firefighters arrived, the family, including children, had evacuated in the rain.

Crews entered the home and discovered the small electrical fire in the dryer, which had been operating at the time.

Using thermal imaging, firefighters checked the surrounding walls and found signs of heat. However, those signs dissipated once the dryer was removed.

The home did not have working smoke detectors at the time of the fire.

Any Burton resident who would like to have a smoke detector installed in their home may email safetyed@burtonfd.org.
