A 19-year-old St. Helena Island woman was arrested Wednesday morning after the foot stool she meant to throw at her mother hit her four-year-old sister instead, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

An argument between the woman and her mother escalated around 9:30 a.m. in their home off Sea Island Parkway, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Her mother told deputies that her daughter didn’t work and that she was throwing her belongings out of the house, according to the report.

Angry about being kicked out, the woman hurled a small foot stool at her mother but missed, striking her sister instead, according to the report. The child had a “knot” above her eye as a result, the report said.

The older sister said she didn’t mean to hit the child, but “admitted she was trying to hit her mother,” according to the report.

The woman was charged with a third degree assault and battery misdemeanor and taken to Beaufort County Detention Center late Wednesday morning, according to online detention center records. She was released on personal recognizance early Thursday afternoon, according to online court records.
