Long-empty trailer catches fire on St. Helena Island

A long-empty Cuffy Road trailer caught fire on St. Helena Island Tuesday evening.

A witness saw smoke around 7:30 p.m. and called 911, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Lady’s Island-St. Helena Island Fire District personnel said the fire was not suspicious and was likely started accidentally by squatters, according to the report. The owner of the home died several years ago and no one has lived there since, the report said.

There will not be an investigation, according to the report.
