Community contributions: Operation Holiday Heroes
A family came into one of the United Way of the Lowcountry’s partner agencies seeking assistance to help keep their lights on and brightened spirits with their giving hearts.
Both of the parents are working and just able to make ends meet to support their family of five, with children ages 2, 3 and 5.
Despite their financial struggles, they are doing all they can to teach their children about the importance of giving to others. As the mother and her children came into the office to meet with the social worker, each child was carrying a toy.
On the way out, each of the children gave their toy to the social worker in the hopes she would share it with a child who didn’t have toys.
The mother said each of the children picked a toy from their toy box to bring into the agency to donate to other children for Christmas.
Operation Holiday Heroes is a countywide collaboration to ensure that every child and family in need has toys and food for Christmas. United Way of the Lowcountry partners with the Toys for Tots Foundation, The Beaufort Gazette and The Island Packet, Deep Well Project, Bluffton Self Help, The Salvation Army and Love House Ministries to accomplish this mission.
