United Way distributes $100K for Hurricane Matthew assistance
The United Way of the Lowcountry has given area agencies $100,000 to help residents in Beaufort and Jasper counties recover from Hurricane Matthew.
The grants will go to the Deep Well Project, Bluffton Self Help, Help of Beaufort and the Salvation Army. The money will help residents affected by the storm with temporary shelter, utility bills, and rent or mortgage assistance.
United Way’s board of directors voted to allocate the money.
“Since Hurricane Matthew, we have seen the needs in our community increase exponentially,” United Way president and CEO Tina Lamb Gentry said in a news release. “People who have never requested assistance in the past are now in need, and as you can imagine, this has put a strain on our front-line partner agencies.”
