Police officers were there to shoot targets for training. One shot himself.

An officer with the Beaufort Police Department suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound during a training day on Wednesday, according to a report filed with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a call about the discharging of a service firearm at the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Range at 120 Shanklin Road in Burton.

According to multiple witness accounts from fellow law enforcement in the report, the Beaufort police officer fired a single gunshot into his right foot.

The officer told a nearby sergeant that he had dropped the magazine from his pistol and was clearing his weapon.

Officers from the Bluffton Police Department Special Response Team and the Beaufort Police Department Special Operations Team were at the range for a combined training day.

A Bluffton medic already on the scene for the training attended to the wounded officer before EMS arrived. The medic observed in his interview with BCSO that the wound was clean through.

The officer was then taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. As of Saturday afternoon, representatives with Beaufort Memorial did not have any information pertaining to the officer’s admittance or his condition.
