Beaufort Elementary organizing to feed area students, families
Update:
Red Cross will again deliver food to families out of Beaufort Elementary School on Thursday.
They will serve lunch between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and dinner from 4 to 7 p.m., or until food runs out.
Posted Wednesday afternoon:
After learning that some of her students were going hungry in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, a Beaufort principal organized to get food to students and families without power or transportation.
Beaufort Elementary School principal Melissa Holland and school staff have already used their own cars to ferry MREs — meals ready to eat — and water from county distribution points to apartment complexes where many of their lower-income families live. Later today, they will help give out additional meals.
Holland said the food and water were distributed to two apartment complexes served by Neighborhood Outreach Connection, which partners with Beaufort Elementary with after-school programs.
“I’m so proud of our staff,” Holland said. “The way they put everything together and got it done was amazing. They were just awesome.”
Beaufort Elementary staff is also helping Saint Helena Episcopal Church in serving 100 hot meals to families at the Parkview Apartments complex in Beaufort at 4:30 p.m. today and and the Red Cross and FEMA in serving 300 meals in the Beaufort Elementary parking lot at 5 p.m.
