St. Helena painting flies off car roof - have you seen it?
A St. Helena Island artist accidentally left her 3-by-2-foot, $6,000 painting on the roof of her car and drove off on Friday.
Monique de Latour picked up her painting, “The St. Helena Fishermen,” from the St. Helena Public Library where is was on display, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report and the artist.
The proceeds from selling the painting were supposed to go to the library and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, she said. The piece is meant to depict some of the “challenges (the Gullah/Geechee people) are facing affecting their traditional way of life (including) over-fishing by large commercial trawlers,” her website explains.
When she got home, she set it on top of her car and began to look for wood to make a frame for the canvas painting, according to the report.
She forgot the painting was there around 4:30 p.m., drove to Fripp Island and didn’t notice it was missing until a friend asked to see it around 9:30 p.m., according to the report. She retraced her steps and searched her neighborhood, to no avail.
It is an acrylic painting of two black men fishing on a dock beneath an orange sunset with “Delatour” signed on the bottom right hand corner and the artist’s full name on the back, according to the report.
