South Carolina teachers have it rough, according to a new report
South Carolina is the ninth worst state for teacher-friendliness, according to a recent analysis by WalletHub.
The report, released Monday, analyzed the 50 states and Washington, D.C. across 16 key metrics, from average starting salary to pupil-teacher ration, and found South Carolina ranked higher more teacher-friendly than just eight states: North Carolina, Maine, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oregon, Arizona, West Virginia, and — in last place — Hawaii.
South Carolina was the third worst state for its academic and work environment, according to the report.
New Jersey ranked as the most teacher-friendly state in the country and Texas topped the list for job opportunities and competition. While Vermont was the third worst state for those opportunities, it was the best in the country for its academic and work environment, according to WalletHub.
Here’s how South Carolina did on some of the key metrics:

▪ 32nd – Average Starting Salary for Teachers (Adjusted for Cost of Living)

▪ 38th – Median Annual Salary for Teachers (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
▪ 40th – 10-Year Change in Teacher Salaries
▪ 42nd – School Safety
