Community contributions: Operation Holiday Heroes
A single mother recently applied for Christmas assistance through Operation Holiday Heroes.
She said her husband had lost his battle with cancer at the beginning of the year. She is now a single mother to three young boys.
When Hurricane Matthew hit, they were fortunate enough to have money saved for Christmas to use to evacuate. However, when they returned home, their home was badly damaged. A huge tree had fallen into the house and basically split it in half. Most of the damage was in the boys’ bedrooms; everything they didn’t bring with them was destroyed.
Operation Holiday Heroes assisted the mother and gave her additional resources to help with damages. The mother was truly grateful, knowing her children will have toys under the tree for Christmas.
Operation Holiday Heroes is a countywide collaboration to ensure that every child and family in need has toys and food for Christmas. United Way of the Lowcountry partners with the Toys for Tots Foundation, The Beaufort Gazette and The Island Packet, Deep Well Project, Bluffton Self Help, The Salvation Army and Love House Ministries to accomplish this mission.
