Community contributions: Bluffton Self Help
Freda Mae has lived in the Lowcountry all of her life. She owns her mobile home and lives on family owned land.
Her sole monthly income comes from social security benefits. She budgets wisely and stretches her monthly income to cover her taxes, utilities, medical expenses, groceries and car insurance. She is unable to set any money aside to save for emergencies.
This summer had been particularly hot, and as a result she found herself unable to pay her electric bill, which had doubled.
Bluffton Self Help was able to help cover the bill and signed her up for its food distribution program so she could save money on groceries.
Bluffton Self Help provides a broad range of social services for poor working families, the disabled, the sick and the elderly.
