Community contributions: Deep Well Project
The day before hurricane Matthew arrived on Hilton Head, so did Eve.
She was homeless and ready to give birth in two weeks. Eve showed Deep Well workers two government checks but she was unable to cash them because she had no ID due to leaving an abusive situation in a great hurry.
Deep Well immediately applied for her birth certificate and put her up at an off-island motel. By the time staff returned from the evacuation, they found that Eve had given birth and was still in the hospital.
Upon her discharge, a staff member took her and her birth certificate to get her ID, allowing her to cash the checks she needed to find more permanent housing. Deep Well also provided a crib, diapers and clothes for the baby.
Deep Well provides a broad range of social services for poor working families, the disabled, the sick and the elderly.
