Hilton Head community leader to host Career Day for black youth

The native islander community of Hilton Head Island is sponsoring a Career Day on Saturday to motivate teenagers and young adults and expose them to professions outside the hospitality industry.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island, 151 Gumtree Road, Hilton Head.

Professionals will give short presentations on their respective fields, from the NFL to mechanical engineering, the military, education and work for local companies like Hargray and Palmetto Electric.

The event is being organized Herbert Ford, who serves on the Hilton Head Public Service District board of commissioners and is a retired member of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He is a member of a new anti-violence group that has also hosted motivational speakers in recent months.

Teenagers and adults 13 to 25 years of age are encouraged to attend the Career Day, which aims to foster intellectual development and provide young, black Hilton Head Islanders to a variety of networking opportunities.

The speakers on Saturday are primarily black, as well, but Ford says he invites people of any racial background to attend.
