Workers delayed at Hilton Head Plantation gate for ID check

Workers were delayed getting to jobs in Hilton Head Plantation Monday morning.

Security personnel with the gated community stopped each commercial vehicle to ensure drivers were properly licensed and authorized to enter.

Hilton Head Plantation general manager Peter Kristian said the extra scrutiny was part of “a random spot-check” and not a permanent policy change for workers accessing the neighborhood.

“This is a check to make sure we are dealing with a licensed driver,” he said.

In the past, decals and passes granting access to the community have been “passed along by unscrupulous” contractors to unlicensed drivers, he said.

There have been accidents within the community involving unlicensed drivers operating commercial vehicles, he said.

Monday’s beefed up security checks were meant to be a “heads up to the owners of these companies that we will be checking IDs,” Kristian said.
