Is your dirt road on Hilton Head’s radar?
Off Hilton Head Island’s main stretch of U.S. 278 remain about 90 dirt roads in various stages of disrepair.
Only the worst-off rise to the top of the list, which the town updates each year after visiting and surveying each road.
The priority list is based on the length of the road, the number of people who live on it and the cost of maintaining the land as dirt by periodically grading and spreading gravel.
At the top of the list for paving are the following town-owned dirt roads, and the number of homes they access:
- Blazing Star Lane: 12
- Rhiner Drive: 5
- Wiley Road: 14
The town owns another nine dirt roads:
- Bayberry Lane*
- Cassina Lane*
- Dogwood Lane*
- Elderberry Lane*
- Juniper Lane*
- Laural Lane*
- Sea Oak Lane*
- Viola Lane
- McDonough Lane
*The seven located on the south end of the island will be paved using a storm-water capital improvement project from fall 2017 through spring 2018.

- Wrights Place: 43rd
- Blue Bell Lane: 111th
- Gibson Drive: 134th
- Mitchelville Road: 138th
