New police substation coming to Old Town Bluffton
Bluffton will get a new police substation in Old Town.
Several local contractors and vendors have donated services and products to renovate the old jail and Town Hall at 1264 May River Road, according to a news release.
The town is partly converting the building into a Bluffton Police Department substation so residents can have better access to police services. The town's engineering department will remain on one side of the building.
"Old Town is the hub of Bluffton, where more than 200 events happen each year," Police Chief Joey Reynolds said. "It's important our officers and services are more accessible to the people whom we serve."
Decades ago, the building was the original Town Hall and jail. Later, it was leased to Bluffton Self Help, and for the past three and a half years, the building has housed the town's engineering and storm water departments.
The Remodelers Council of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association has adopted the remodeling job as a community project. Town manager Marc Orlando said that through the town's partnership with the association, about 15 contractors have volunteered time.
Orlando said Grayco donated the entire lumber package for the shed. Richard Creamer of Reminiscent Homes and the chairman of the Remodelers Council of the homebuilders association coordinated all the project's contractors.
Other contractors and vendors who have donated to the project include: Pearce Scott Architects, Surveying Consultants, I.D.S. Specialty Building Products, Orlando and Son's, Garden Gate Nursery, Rose Landscape, Rodriguez Foundations, Custom Security Specialists, Sign D'Sign and W.M. Enterprises Sign Division.
The remodel will include building a small garage for equipment, new signs, paint, replacement of a portion of the roof, lighting, shutters, security system, parking lot improvements, a new flag pole and landscaping.
"Adding the project management time, with the contractors' labor and donated materials, the town has saved thousands of dollars," Orlando said. "More importantly, when many hands are involved, it represents a true community investment."
Construction is expected to be completed in May.
"The goal of this project is to bring our services closer to our residents; however, the project is also a testament to our amazing community spirit as several local contractors and vendors have partnered with us to make this happen," Mayor Lisa Sulka said. "Once again, I am so impressed with our community and its dedication to a better Bluffton."
