Blue Cross Blue Shield sending refund checks

The largest health insurer in South Carolina is sending rebate checks to some policyholders because it failed to meet a requirement of the federal health care law.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/NSNuu8) Blue Cross Blue Shield says the checks will be mailed in the next two weeks.

The checks go to individual and small group policyholders and most checks will be less than $200.

The newspaper reported the company was deemed not to have spent enough on customers' medical claims last year under provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

The company says it is complying with the law.

Blue Cross Blue Shield's Jim Deyling says the rebate creates the false impression of overcharging. Deyling also says the law does nothing to reduce health care expense for members.
