County administrator asks treasurer to resign after ex-clerk charged with embezzlement

Beaufort County Administrator Gary Kubic called on Treasurer Joy Logan to resign Wednesday after one of her former employees was arrested for embezzling more than $210,000 from public accounts.

"What we've learned about the management practices of the Treasurer's Office, we have a credibility problem in my opinion," Kubic said. "Joy Logan needs to consider resigning from her position so we can restore credibility to the Treasurer's Office."

"Who is he to tell me to resign?" Logan said of Kubic. "I've dedicated 20 years of my life to this county and to the voters and I'm not going to throw my life away."

The employee in question -- 28-year-old Casaundra White -- was arrested Wednesday and charged with 11 counts of embezzlement of public funds and criminal conspiracy. She is accused of funneling $210,012 from Treasurer's Office accounts through dummy corporations between May 2007 and September 2008.

"Casaundra White has ruined my reputation but Gary Kubic has been saying this is my fault and using this to harm me politically," Logan said, who has been treasurer since 1991.

Logan is up for re-election in November and likely faces no opposition for the job that pays $80,623 per year.
