See if the Hilton Head area restaurants with the worst health inspections in June improved
Three Beaufort County restaurants and a grocery store failed to receive A grades last month.
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture conducts routine inspections of food-serving businesses each month. The inspections grade businesses on five risk-based factors the SCDA defines as most commonly identified causes of foodborne illness:
- Food holding temperatures
- Cooking temperatures
- Food contact equipment cleanliness
- Food sources
- Employee health
Routine inspections are unannounced and conducted between one and four times a year based on a businesses’ risk level and compliance history, according to the SCDA. Grades are based on a 100-point scale. More than 87 points results in an A grade, 78 to 87 a B grade, and less than 78 a C grade.
Businesses are required to display a label with their inspection grade. Follow-up inspections are given to businesses when required.
Have the four B-graded businesses regained As?
La Poblanita and Roadhouse Ribs
La Poblanita grocery store at 117 Matthews Drive on Hilton Head Island and Roadhouse Ribs at 7 Toppers Lane in Port Royal both received follow-up inspections in June. La Poblanita received a B with 78 points, and Roadhouse Ribs received a B with 79 points.
La Poblanita’s June 17 follow-up inspection netted it an A grade with 99 points. The report notes one food-thawing violation.
Roadhouse Ribs’s June 30 follow-up inspection resulted in an A grade with 97 points. Rust in the restaurant’s walk-in cooler remains and its bar’s floor is in poor condition, the report notes.
Club Seats Grille
Club Seats Grille, a sports bar and pizzeria at 2600 Main St., Hilton Head Island, received a B grade with 78 points in its June 29 routine inspection. The report noted an employee who touched their cell phone and then food without washing their hands, organic growth on the restaurant’s indoor and outdoor ice boxes and “swarming” drain flies.
A follow-up inspection on July 7 gave Club Seats Grille an A grade with 97 points. Three issues were found despite the higher grade. Inspectors observed pie serving tools and kitchen knives stored in dirty containers, the dumpster area littered with trash and a large section of the kitchen floor made with “unsealed plywood.” The report notes an additional follow-up inspection will be carried out, but no date is listed.
Ombra Cucina Rustica
Hilton Head Italian restaurant Ombra Cucina Rustica at 1000 William Hilton Parkway received a B grade with 78 points in a routine inspection on June 29. Inspectors observed an employee spread ice with their bare hands, organic growth in a dish machine and organic matter on items in a walk-in cooler.
Its follow-up inspection on July 7 netted the restaurant an A grade with 100 points. The report notes no observed issues at the restaurant.
