Inflatable bull, fire extinguishers and pigs: What caused chaos at May River High
Days after school was let out early because of an alleged “senior prank gone wrong,” the Beaufort County School District is sharing more information about what exactly happened last week at Bluffton’s May River High School.
In a message sent to families Monday, the school district told parents and guardians that while the estimated cost of repairs to the school is still being assessed, the most money will need to be spent on “extensive clean-up required due to fire extinguishers being sprayed without cause.”
Furniture was overturned, there was an inflatable mechanical bull outside, and syrup, soap, toilet paper, olive oil and pickles also had to be cleaned up, the district said. Pigs were also released in the school, according to previous reporting from the Island Packet.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, the school district said, when a custodian employed by ABM let students into the building. School was dismissed early on Friday because of the incident, with buses bringing students home at 11:45 a.m.
Bluffton Police are currently investigating, the school district said. Discipline and restitution for the students involved “are yet to be determined,” BCSD said.
Normal operations have resumed at the school, besides one classroom and the gym, which will be operational Tuesday, the district said.
“As a reminder, we ask that parents speak with students about making responsible choices and understanding the potential consequences of their actions,” the district said.
