A Bluffton man injured in a serious accident last month has woken up from his coma, his mother shared on social media Friday.

Kiernan Hughes, a Bluffton native, was seriously injured in a March 5 crash in Colleton County while traveling home from a job in the Charleston area, according to previous reporting from WTOC.

Family members have been sharing updates about Hughes’ recovery on social media. Hughes has been in a coma at the Medical University of South Carolina, according to the posts.

Hughes’ left arm had to be amputated to protect his brain, WTOC reported.

The Bluffton community has been rallying in support of the family since the devastating crash. A GoFundme for Hughes’ family has raised over $36,000 as of Sunday. A silent auction was held for Hughes on March 13.

Mother Charlotte Hughes posted on Friday evening that her son had woken up from his coma, nearly a month after the crash.

“My heart is exploding with joy!” she wrote. “We have a long road ahead but just to see that face is amazing!”
