Hilton Head ex-teacher faces felony charge for allegedly assaulting 2-year-old student
A former teacher at a Hilton Head Island childhood education center was arrested on accusations of physically abusing a 2-year-old developmentally delayed student, according to police.
Laurel Beck Wall, 46, of Bluffton, was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and two counts of cruelty to children, inmate records show. She turned herself in Wednesday morning after a police interview in late March where police showed her the school’s footage of her allegedly assaulting the young boy in the classroom, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Wall primarily ran a classroom of about seven students between 2 and 3 years old at The Children’s Center nonprofit on north-end Hilton Head, the facility’s executive director told police. She was fired March 5 after the director viewed video recordings of Wall allegedly slapping the 2-year-old boy, “stomp(ing)” on his ankle and dragging him by the arms across the classroom, according to the report and a statement from the childcare center.
Wall then allegedly pushed the boy to the ground, causing his head to “snap back” into a wooden cabinet against the wall, the report’s account of the footage reads. She allegedly grabbed the child by his arms, jerking him away from the wall before “appearing to shove (him) backwards against the wall in a seated position,” the report says.
The 2-year-old reached for the back of his head and began “apparently screaming and crying,” the deputy’s report says, prompting Wall to grab an ice pack to apply to the boy’s head. The video footage did not include audio, police said.
The same Beaufort County deputy in late March contacted the boy’s father, who said his child was developmentally delayed in terms of his speech but behaved like a “normal 2-year-old child otherwise,” according to the report. The father recalled a head injury the boy sustained at school “some time ago” and, after being informed of Wall’s alleged criminal activity, told police he wished to pursue charges.
Founded nearly 60 years ago, The Children’s Center aims to provide affordable childcare to working families in the Lowcountry. It serves over 100 children between 6 weeks and 8 years old, according to its most recent annual report for 2024.
In a statement sent by Executive Director Jody Levitt, the Children’s Center said it took “immediate and decisive action” on March 5 after learning of an anonymous tip about Wall’s alleged conduct submitted the day before to the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
“The Children’s Center maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding any conduct that compromises the safety or well-being of our students,” the statement read. “We have been in communication with the affected family and continue to cooperate fully with all regulatory and law enforcement agencies.”
Teacher undergoes police interview
Levitt told police about three instances of Wall’s alleged “inappropriate conduct” towards students that occurred in late February and early March, although surveillance video of one incident had been automatically deleted due to their system’s memory limit, according to the incident report. She gave deputies a flash drive with footage from Feb. 27 and March 4, the latter being the date of Wall’s alleged assault on the 2-year-old child.
Wall was shown these videos in a March 30 interview with deputies. She apologized to police for her conduct, the report says, saying she had been stressed due to “behavioral issues” in the classroom. (The March 4 incident began when the 2-year-old appeared to hit Wall, the police report says, leading the teacher to allegedly push the broom she was using into the child’s leg and trip him with it.)
“I was stressed ... and the children not following directions ... I deeply regret letting my frustrations get the better of me,” Wall was quoted saying in the report. “I do apologize, I should have asked for help.”
Wall was hired by The Children’s Center in August, Levitt told police, and had “years of experience” at other childcare facilities. She had been disciplined in late October for yelling at children in the classroom and was placed on a two-week probation, the director said.
Levitt added that Wall’s employment history had been verified, background checks “returned clear” and that she wasn’t aware of any prior disciplinary action against Wall at her past jobs, the report says.
Court records show Wall was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center shortly after noon Wednesday, about five hours after her booking time, on surety bonds totaling nearly $16,000.
Under South Carolina criminal statutes, unlawful conduct toward a child is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Cruelty to children is a misdemeanor with a monthlong maximum sentence.
The Children’s Center, located at 8 Nature’s Way near the north-island U.S. 278 junction, was founded in 1967 as The Child and Youth Development Center. It is the second-oldest nonprofit organization on Hilton Head, Levitt told Pink Magazine.
