It’s a talon as old as time.

Construction in one Bluffton residential community may be halted or paused due to a recently discovered eagles’ nest.

The active bald eagles’ nest was found near a construction site in Palmetto Bluff, according to a Tuesday email sent to community members from Tim Struzynski, director of the Palmetto Bluff Preservation Trust.

A project to install anti-erosion structures along the riverbanks in the southern portion of Wilson Village may be halted or slowed down to avoid disturbing the eagles.

Regulations prohibit the construction activity from being conducted within a certain distance of the nest, Struzynski wrote. The work will continue up to that threshold.

Nesting season ends in mid-May, according to Struzynski. The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy is “monitoring the Eagle nest closely,” he wrote.

The project will be completed in the summer “if all goes as planned,” he added.

The exact location of the eagles’ nest was not included in the email. Struzynski did not immediately respond to an emailed request for more information.

Federal regulations prohibit the disturbance of bald eagles’ nests without a permit.

During breeding season, loud activities within 330 feet of a bald eagles’ nest may require a permit, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

What’s happening at Palmetto Bluff?

According to Struzynski’s email, workers are constructing revetments on the riverbanks on the south portion of Wilson Village.

A revetment is a sloped, protected barrier constructed on shorelines or riverbanks to prevent erosion.

Work on the project began in February, according to the email. The staging and work area has been fenced off, and workers have finished regrading the Bluff along the riverbank.

To protect the bluff, they’ve begun installing a layer of mesh fabric and rock on the banks.

Palmetto Bluff is a 20,000 acre residential community in Bluffton, known for its premier golf courses, million-dollar homes, and five-star resort, Montage Palmetto Bluff.
